Anointing Oil in the Bible: You are passionate for righteousness, and you hate lawlessness. This is why God, your God, crowns you with bliss above your fellow kings. He has anointed you, more than any other, with his oil of fervent joy, the very fragrance of heaven’s gladness.
The use of anointing oil for healing is a practice that is deeply rooted in the Christian faith. The Bible speaks of the power of anointing oil, which can be used to bring physical, emotional, and spiritual healing to those who seek it. In this blog post, we will discuss what the Bible says about using anointing oil for healing, including which biblical passages discuss it and how it can be used today.
Today, anointing with oil is being restored in the Church as a way to intentionally seek a deeper connection with God and to use as a tool for spiritual warfare.
Anointing with oil dates back to the Old Testament when the Israelites were instructed to anoint sacred items with holy oil (Exodus 30). In the New Testament, the disciples and elders of the Church used oil to anoint the sick which often led to miraculous healings. Jesus himself provided instruction for using oil in regular spiritual practices such as fasting. He was anointed with a special mixture of frankincense, myrrh, and olive oil (the so-called “oil of joy”) as an act of worship by Mary Magdalene (Luke 7:38).
In Isaiah 10:27, it is written: “It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.” This prophetic verse speaks of the power of anointing with oil to break free from oppression and bring supernatural joy. Through prayer, many people have experienced healing and deliverance with anointing oil.
How to use anointing oil
Anointing oil is a powerful way to pray for God’s healing and blessing for yourself, your family, your car, your house, and your belongings. The Bible says, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:13-14)
Anointing oil has no magical power or superstition attached to it - its power comes from God and it is used by faith.
The oil in the Bible was likely made up of scented oils like frankincense and myrrh, as well as rose of Sharon. When we use the anointing oil in Jesus’ name today, our faith goes before us and we believe we will receive healing and protection by His Spirit.
We can use anointing oil in prayer by rubbing a few drops into our palms and praying for ourselves or others who may be sick or in need of healing. We can also place some drops on the door frames of our homes to remind us to pray for those within the household, or on car bumpers to protect those who are traveling.
